Fr. 190b Compound Interest Treasury Note--Tied for Finest Known

Fr. 190b $10 1864 Compound Interest Treasury Note Choice New. Although just about 100 examples of this number are known, they are virtually all low grade and/or damaged. This is one of only two uncirculated Fr. 190b's known to exist. We sold the other note in January of 2000 for $115,500. This is the first time we have handled this note and if memory serves, it is identical to the piece we did handle. The bronze has remained fully bright, and the note is utterly free of any defect, repair, restoration, or sign of circulation. It has three broad margins, and the bottom, though the smallest of the four, does not touch the design at any point. Although there was no Fr. 190b in our Taylor Family Sale last February, similar finest known pieces realized runaway prices.
