Description

Desirable Compound Interest $10

"Dec. 15, 1864" Fr. 190b $10 1864 Compound Interest Treasury Note PMG Very Fine 20.
Friedberg 190b is one of only a couple of Compound Interest Treasury Note numbers that can be deemed collectable with a Track & Price population of 107. This example, with serial number 268150-A, possesses the final overprint date of "Dec. 15, 1864" for this Friedberg number. This desirable example made its recorded auction debut at a September 1974 Pine Tree auction. Later, it found its way on to a 1978 Don Kelly fixed price list. It would go on to cross our auction block for the first time in May 1998. At this point, it would be held by one owner until we auctioned it again in January 2020. The bronze surcharge on this note, unlike many in this grade, has not fully oxidized. Despite the minor restoration noted by PMG which consists of well executed edge repairs restricted to the top and bottom margins, this piece is substantially above average for this class of notes. Almost all examples were redeemed for the principal and interest of $11.94 at maturity, which was three years after the note's overprint date found on the face.
