PCGS 63PPQ Solid Surcharge Fessenden
Fr. 1299 25c Third Issue PCGS Choice New 63PPQ. This solid-surcharge Fessenden is a rare and perennially popular type. Most examples on this heavy fiber paper are aged, poorly printed or damaged. The paper itself split very easily, and its rough surface was less than ideal for receiving the ink or bronzing. This particular example is a conspicuous exception, with absolutely none of the problems that are normally encountered. It's bright, well printed and beautifully bronzed. It's well centered on the face, and the back is only slightly low, just barely touching the bottom margin. This is the only 63 yet graded by PCGS; PMG has also graded one 63 and a single 64.
