Description

Incredibly High Grade Fr. 1296

Fr. 1296 25¢ Third Issue PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ★ .
This is the rare variety with the extremely large "a" 7mm to the lower right of its normal position. This shifted position occurred only on face plate 144, which was one of 90 plates used. This information was originally researched by Martin Gengerke at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing Archives in Washington. He published his findings in Paper Money magazine (Volume 11 Number 2 Whole Number 42 page 80) in 1972. The PMG Population Report shows a single 66. It also reports a single 67, with no mention of a Star grade, leading to some confusion as to whether this note is the 66 or 67. In any event, at the least it is the second finest known, superior to the Liechty, Gengerke, Friedberg and O'Mara examples.
