Description

Exceedingly Rare Fr. 1254 Specimen

Fr. 1254SP 10¢ Third Issue PCGS Banknote Uncirculated 62.
One of only five examples known, and a highlight note missing from almost all collections. The last 1254SP that we handled was just this January, when Bob Laub's note, which graded one point higher than this, sold for $7200 on an estimate of $5000-up. The Tabacco note was previously sold by us in the O'Mara sale, as lot 16295, with this description: "This is one of the finest of the very few known Fr. 1254 Wide Margin Specimens that we have ever seen. It's fully uncirculated, with bold, original embossing, broad margins and strong signatures that have not even a hint of a crack. The bronze is fully bright, as are the paper and the inks. Wayne Liechty did not have a Fr. 1254SP, and the Milt Friedberg example was a nice About New. Most of today's active collectors have not had the opportunity to purchase a truly nice Fr. 1254SP, and this one should garner considerable attention. Rob Kravitz's excellent book states, 'Very rare: eight known [for this number].' We can trace only five, which we believe to be accurate."
