Description

Exceptional Pink Fractional Shield

Fr. 1383 Fractional Currency Shield With Pink Background.
An exceptional example with a far bolder pink background than what we are accustomed to seeing. The Shield is free of water stains save for two at the bottom with only one of those coming into contact with the pink background. That stain is at bottom center and just barely contacts the bottom point of the Shield. It is fully wide on all four sides. This is one of approximately two dozen Pink Shields known to exist, many of which are faded and/or damaged. Our present offering is clearly in the top 25%, if not higher, for both condition and color. The attached Red Back Fractionals have held their color very nicely and the only faded note is, as usual, the extremely light-sensitive 25¢ Second Issue back. The Shield is under glass with a relatively modern wood frame that has a hanging wire on the back. The paper backing shows some splitting, but is more than capable of carrying out its function. As with virtually all Pink and Green Shields, all four hand-signed notes bear the Colby-Spinner signature combination, including the rare Grant-Sherman Fr. 1273SP which is found only on the non-gray Shields. Our inspection also observes a thin gutter in the 50¢ Washington in the top row. The highest price attained by a Pink Shield at Heritage was in October 2012 when we auctioned one very comparable to our current example for $22,325. In today's market, we would not be surprised to see that nearly ten year old record to be broken.
