Description

Fr. 1382 Fractional Currency Shield, With Gray Background.
An attractive shield that is nicely framed in a dark brown wood frame with a thin gold inner border. Minor damage to the frame at the corners of the gold inner border is noticed. A paper backing has been added to the frame more recently it appears, making it difficult to discern the age of the frame. Unlike almost all of the surviving shields, this example is virtually free of waterstaining. A few small repaired tears at the outer edges, well outside of the design, are noticed along with a few areas of light paper pulls. There has been little impact to the shield itself, with the stars and eagle design at top remaining dark and providing considerable eye appeal. The hand-signed Justice note has the Colby-Spinner combination as does the 10¢ Washington, with "Register" written in on the 10¢ note. The 50¢ Spinner and the 15¢ Grant-Sherman both have the Jeffries-Spinner signature combination. A few of the notes display minor damage and the typical toning is observed, but the toning is not severe as is sometimes seen. The areas of bronzing remain bright overall. A very nice shield that will certainly make a lovely addition to the next collection it enters.
