Description
Unique Remarkable Triple Denomination Fractional Oddity
Triple Denomination Milton 2E25FR.3 Experimental 10¢ Back / 25¢
Front / 50¢ Overprint Second Issue PMG Choice About Unc 58
EPQ.This triple denomination note is listed as unique in Milton Friedberg's Encyclopedia second edition 2000 on page 76. The front of this piece is the 25¢ note design with a 50¢ bronze overprint along with the D-5-18-63 bronze surcharges in the four corners. The back is an incomplete design of the green ink Second Issue 10¢ design with a blank shield except for two rows of stars. This note's first recorded numismatic appearance was as lot 955 as part of The Charles Wilcox Collection that was auctioned by Samuel H. and Henry Chapman on February 15, 1904. John W. Adams in United States Numismatic Literature Volume One gives the Fractional material in this Chapman Brothers auction a grade of "A" on page 199 with the additional comment of, "rich in essais (sic) and signatures" on page 90. The Encyclopedia also mentions how the piece in this lot is trimmed close on the top and right end. Both the Encyclopedia and the PMG back label mentions the penned annotation on the back at left of "Imperfect Proof." That is a true statement if there ever was one. This remarkable thin fiber paper oddity was obtained by our consignor from Martin Gengerke and it finally returns to the marketplace after 121 years.
