Description

Unique Negative Essay 5 Cent Experimental

Milton 2E5FR.1a Negative Essay Experimental "5-18-63" Surcharges 5¢ Second Issue PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.
A unique Experimental that John J. Ford, Jr. bought from F.C.C. Boyd's widow, Helen. Later, it was lot 284 in the Ford Part XIX auction held in October 2007. The piece in this lot is printed on both sides of grayish-white bond thin fiber paper. The standard black ink face design lacks the bronze oval ring, while the mustard-yellow ink back is of the so-called "negative essay" design where certain design elements of the back are shaded the reverse of the issued design, i.e., where white is dark and vice versa. The back bronze surcharges should be "(D)-5-18-63" and in this case the "D" is missing. Milton 2E5FR.1a is listed as unique on page 48 of Milton Friedberg's Encyclopedia sixth edition 2000 and we have no reason to believe otherwise.
