Incredible 10? Second Issue Washington-Baltimore Experimental Full Sheet - Likely Unique

Notes Believed to be Unique. PCGS Choice About New 55The Boyd Collection, which later became the Ford Accumulation, had two very similar sheets. The first was offered in June of 2005 in Part 11 of the Ford material sale. It was lot 219 and described as having come to Boyd as Lot 943 from the 1904 S.H. Chapman sale of the Charles Wilcox collection. It brought a rather amazing sum of $25 at that time. The second sheet in the Boyd Collection is identical save for its having all the bronze. That sheet, which is this lot, carries the entire bronze wording on eight lines: "FIRST/WASHINGTON, D.C./ FIRST/WASHINGTON, D.C./SECOND/BALTIMORE, MD./SECOND/BALTIMORE, MD." Lot 219 of Ford 11 was printed on a smaller paper and had only seven lines of bronze. This one, which has far broader margins, includes the entire final "BALTIMORE, MD." that is completely lacking from the other sheet. Although we are simply presuming, it is very likely that both sheets trace from the Wilcox Collection, and that Chapman sold this example privately, either before the sale or post-sale to the underbidder of the first sheet. Both are About Uncirculated. The other sheet is brighter. They both share the weak printing at the center of the bottom note in the right-hand column. This sheet has some ageing which has caused the Apparent grade. We don't know the current whereabouts of Lot 219 from the 2005 sale. This sheet is Lot 312 from Stack's October 2007 sale. There are individual notes cut from sheets of this configuration, but no one has ever come close to assembling a full sheet of ten. There is a group of seven that mated in the Ford sale, and Tom O'Mara had a group of five in our sale of his collection in May of '05. It is extraordinarily unlikely that another Uncut Sheet exists, and even more unlikely that a Cut Sheet of ten subjects could ever be located to place a Sheet together.
