Description

Fr. 1283 25¢ Second Issue Treasury Rectangle Note PCGS Choice About New 58PPQ.
The margins vary in size, though the most important margin at the left was not trimmed so far as to get rid of the almost full Treasury Rectangle. There are two versions about why the stamp, "Treas Dpt." was designed and implemented. The first is the rectangle was stamped on the corner of the sheet to indicate that it had been counted. The other argument is that Congress mandated new paper to circumvent counterfeiting, but this requirement was presumably met by denoting each sheet with the stamp. Most Treasury Rectangles do not show anywhere near this large an amount. This one is missing only the top of the rectangle itself, and the very tops of the three tallest letters. If you are looking for a single example for your Fractional set, this high end AU with such a distinct rectangle would be perfect.
