Description

Milton 1E5F.3 5¢ First Issue Essay PMG Choice About Unc 58.
Previously, this item was Lot 870 from our January 1997 Friedberg Collection sale. It was described there, "This strikingly beautiful note is printed in black ink on pure white paper. Its eye appeal is further enhanced by the wide margins, which set off the jet-black printing. Other than a single light fold and some tiny, inconsequential splits at the edges of the margins, the note is flawless. This unique note was discovered by Milt in the late 1970's, barely too late to be included in his encyclopedia. This esoteric Essay is one of Milt's favorite pieces. First issue Essays have particular allure, as they are the very roots of Fractional Currency. It is unfortunate that so few of them exist, because most collectors will never have the opportunity to own a single piece. In the field of Fractional Currency, prices are much lower than in many areas of numismatics, and excessively rare or unique items fit into the budgets of the majority of active collectors. Still, most will never own a First Issue Essay, not on account of price, but because the number of collectors each desiring one simply outstrips the number of pieces in existence. Collectors tend to be extremely tenacious when it comes to First Issue Essays. Since the turn of the century [the other century, remember], there have been less than a handful of instances where an example has reached the open market. The dispersion of Milt's collection is one of those rare, if not historic, opportunities." A simply great note whose importance and rarity is not changed. PMG notes small tears, which are of minimal consequence.
