Description

Incredible Set of Three Denominations of the No Frameline Variety

Fr. 1231SP 5¢ First Issue No Frameline PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ.
We first sold No Frameline First Issue Backs in our 1994 Wayne Liechty sale. He had all three denominations (apparently no 25¢ was produced). We said then, that to our best knowledge it was the first time any collector had three of the possibly four pieces. That remains true. An unproven but generally accepted theory is that these were produced for Treasury Presentation Books. The 25¢ note that appears in these books also lacks the frame line, but it has the ABNCo. monogram which these notes lack. Milt Friedberg had a single 5¢, which was not this piece. Tom O'Mara had Milt's 5¢ and the Liechty 10¢. Now, 25 years later, there is still no 25¢ known, and this is only the second time a 5¢, 10¢ and 50¢ have appeared in the same sale. Generally, no explanation is needed, but the "frameline" in this instance refers to the rectangular rule that closely surrounds the back design. In Bob's set of three, two of the three are large enough to have the other (outer) frameline (cutting guide) that is sometimes seen on Wide Margin Specimens. No more than two or three are known of any of the denominations, and we are quite sure that this is the finest known set.
