Fr. 1309 25¢ Fifth Issue Original Bundle of 200 Choice About
New.We were flabbergasted as the details of this consignment was relayed to us in the days before The National Bank Fruitcake Find made its way to our desks. The Fifth Issue Fractional notes in this consignment were shipped to the National Bank of Athens, Georgia, charter number 1639 in the mid-1870s. The notes have resided in four different bank vaults for almost 150 years as the National Bank of Athens moved from their original location to a second building and in the 21st century they have gone through two mergers.
This bundle is held by a correct Fractional 50 Dollars band of the period. The ends of the band have been joined under the bottom edges of the notes with two bank pins. Two names of possible tellers have been penciled on the band, too. The band does show wear, but overall it is in nice condition for its age. As we counted the bundle, it was observed that all of the notes are from either the "F" or "M" plate positions, which is indicative of an original bundle. Another sign of originality is that all of the notes will not have a needle hole or all of the notes will have a needle hole from being sewn together. We are happy to report that the none of the notes in this bundle have a needle hole. Also, original bundles have square edges with no notes sticking out. That is definitely the case here. This recent find is a significant addition to the Fractional Currency collecting community. (Total: 200 notes)
