"King of Errors" $10/$5 Richmond 1928A

Double Denomination Error Fr. 2001-E $10/$5 1928A Federal Reserve Note. PCGS Banknote Choice Unc 63.
Double denominations have been long regarded as the "King of Errors" and rightfully so as they produce excitement among both collectors and non-collectors alike. We have auctioned this example with serial number E04672279A twice before, first at our auction of the comprehensive Taylor Family collection in February 2005 and again at our January 2011 FUN auction. Both of the major error references, United States Paper Money Errors: A Comprehensive Catalog & Price Guide fourth edition by Dr. Frederick J. Bart and US Error Note Encyclopedia second edition by Stephen M. Sullivan document the same eight serial numbers known for this error type and Friedberg number. However, in September 2017, we auctioned a newly discovered serial number, E04744283A, after these valuable references were published. Therefore, the updated population figure stands at nine.

A look at the enumerated serial numbers in addition to their plate numbers tells us that this double denomination error was created in this fashion. A sheet of twelve uncut $5 backs was printed first as usual, but somehow this lone $5 sheet made its way into a $10 pile of back sheets where it then received the $10 front printing. Next, the sheet of twelve was cut down into vertical half sheets of six. At this point each $10/$5 half sheet went through its overprint third printing of the serial numbers and Treasury Seal. Therefore, the maximum population figure for this particular double denomination error can only be twelve. However, we will be very surprised if any more are discovered after 90 years. This Richmond $10/$5 double denomination is available far less frequently than the 1934D Kansas City $5/$10 with a population close to 40 serial numbers recorded. The last double denomination that we auctioned was one of the Kansas City examples in PMG 65 EPQ that realized $44,400 in January 2024. Our current Richmond double denomination may have a grade a slightly lower than the Kansas City example, but it easily makes up for that in rarity.
