    HB-129 EP-46 Reed JG03 3¢ J. Gault Extremely Fine.
This Three Cent is a denomination that is far scarcer than one might expect. Reed correctly considers it an R-8: five to ten known. It has about the same number of auction appearances as the One Cent and Ninety Cent in Fred Reed's 1891 through 1994 auction survey. The rather surprising numbers are 45 One Cent, 44 Three Cent and 43 Ninety Cent. It must be remembered that these numbers are all-inclusive, with heavily repeated appearances. This piece has an extremely nice, high-end, naturally colored case. The stamp is somewhat faded, and the mica has a number of surface marks and a separation exposing the lower levels of mica in Washington's hair.
