Confederate States Post Office Warrant Trans-Mississippi Department $78.91 Jan. 27, 1865
A well preserved Postal Warrant numbered 218 graded Very Fine 30PPQ, CC by PCGS. The warrant measures approximately 8 1/2 inches by 4 1/2 inches and was payable to C. & W. Dibrell, assignees of John A. Clark. The Dibrells were located in Hallettsville, LaVaca Co. Texas. The handwritten text along the left border reads, "In lieu of P.O. Dept. Warrant 1155 to Jno. A. Clark, on Asst. Treas. New Orls. March 25, 1862." D.F. Shall signed as Auditor of the Trans-Mississippi Department and Dr. James H. Starr signed as the Agent of the Trans-Mississippi Post Office Department. Starr was appointed as agent by an Act of the Confederate Congress that was approved on February 16, 1864. The two men were located at the Trans-Mississippi sub treasury in Marshall, TX. The back reads, "The Depositary of the Confederate States of America at Houston, Texas will pay within Warrant January 28, 1865" and was signed M.J. Hall, Treasurer. The text continues, "Received the amount of the within Warrant from James Sorley Depositary, Houston" March 2, 1865 and was signed by Frank C. Kelly. The portrait at top center is that of Confederate Postmaster-General John Henninger Reagan (1818-1905). He later became one of the founders of the Texas State Historical Association.
