Bright AU T58 Inverted Back Error - A Truly Incredible Rarity
Inverted Back Error T58 $20 1863 PF-4IB Cr. UNL PMG About
Uncirculated 55.While errors on Confederate Treasury Notes are elusive and highly sought after in general, the inverted back error remains a true rarity on virtually all of the types upon which it is exhibited. This error appears quite infrequently on T58 $20 examples, as evidenced by the fact that we have only offered four representatives across all Fricke varieties prior to now. The note presented here, printed on plain paper with Engraved by Keatinge & Ball Columbia, S.C. in the left margin towards the top and a small "1st Series." printed at upper right, is the first example of the PF-4IB variation we have had the privilege of auctioning. In Pierre Fricke's 2014 reference, the author grants this number an R14 rarity, two notes known, with this note, numbered 34369, being a new addition to that meager census. In January 2024, we offered a PMG 53 certified representative of the PF-12IB variation. That note, encapsulated at the PMG 53 level, brought $8,400. PMG mentions that this example is repaired near the end of the register's signature, but this minor issue will likely affect little in the eyes of a true Confederate specialist. Based on the recent market for Confederate scarcities, we should easily see that figure tested or even surpassed tonight for this impressive piece.
