Description

Impairment Free Confederate Fantasy Note

T48 $10 1862 "XX-3" PMG Very Fine 20.
The T48 is similar to the T47 Confederate because of its engraved signatures, vignette of R.M.T. Hunter at right, and comically bungled printer's imprint of Keatings & Ball, Columbus, SC. However, the two are distinguished by the central vignette. On the T47, Ceres is seated by a striped shield and cotton bales. On this T48, Ceres glances to her right as cattle graze in the background. The type is, just like the T47, believed to be an experimental note, a fantasy design not affiliated with the Confederate Treasury, or a piece produced postwar. In Pierre Fricke's 2014 book Collecting Confederate Paper Money, the rarity is listed as R10, 21-50 known. We auctioned a PMG VF 20 with stains for $12,000 in May 2023. Our current offering is boldly inked with a full inner and outer frame, and exhibits problem free, even wear. The May 2023 figure should easily be topped tonight.
