Lovely Mid-Grade T47 $20

T47 / XX-2 $20 1862 PF-1 Cr. 345 PMG Choice Very Fine 35.
The debate continues unabated regarding just exactly what this note is. The two most widely held viewpoints are that (1) this was some type of essay or proposed design that was never adopted or (2) this was a fantasy note intended for the collector market. There are several interesting details about this note. The imprint is Keatings & Ball Columbus, SC. This rules out Keatinge & Ball, Columbia, SC, as the source since they would never let such a blundered imprint see the light of day. The possibility exists that Hoyer & Ludwig did this as a quasi-satirical note as part of a proposed design or test note program to demonstrate printed signatures or new designs to the CSA Department of Treasury. The note has similar features to T46, including a portrait of R.M.T. Hunter, which was quietly awarded to Hoyer & Ludwig. The second theory is that this is a pure fantasy note of uncertain vintage intended for the collector market, although it certainly seems to be contemporary to the Civil War time period. Regardless, the note is both rare and popular, with this pleasant mid-grade example being fully margined and well printed. PMG mentions pinholes which are somewhat of a moot issue on a note of this rarity.
