Description
Incredible Confederate Fantasy Note
T47 $20 1862 PF-2 Cr. UNL PCGS Banknote Very Fine 30.While the true origins of this enigmatic type, as well as the background of its T48 counterpart, are currently unknown, several prevailing theories exist, including a postulation that they are fantasy or bogus notes of similar origins to the Female Riding Deer counterfeits. Though this may very well be true, they are valued far more due to their great rarity. The T47 design, which bears the curious and quite humorous imprint of Keatings & Ball, Columbus, S.C., features a portrait of Confederate Secretary of State R.M.T. Hunter at lower right and a vignette of Liberty seated on cotton bales and surrounded by sheaves of wheat, a large bag of coins, and a shield. This piece displays printed signatures and serial numbers which were to be handwritten. Two variations of shield designs are known on this type. The first contains a shield with vertical stripes, while the second, scarcer version, which this note showcases, includes a shield with a checkered pattern. Our current offering is well printed on bright paper with good body, and a nearly full frame is present. We have not auctioned a comparable example of this type since January 2025, when a PCGS Apparent VF 35 certified note with minor edge repairs brought $5,040. This note also has several minor repairs which are nearly indiscernible through the third-party holder, but it remains an excellent representative of a type which has only grown in popularity in recent years.
