Vicksburg Siege Related Place-of-Issue Note

"Issued at Deer Creek, MS" T41 $100 1862 PF-20 Cr. 316A PMG Very Fine 30.
Although slightly obscured by one of two Montgomery IP stamps, a manuscript entry on this note indicates that it was issued at Deer Creek, MS, on June 1, 1863. No town by that name exists today and current thinking suggests that this refers to a general area around Deer Creek, which runs south through the Mississippi Delta. Deer Creek was the site of an abortive attempt by Union gunboats to advance up the waterway. They became mired down and were finally rescued by Sherman's troops on March 23, 1862, without accomplishing their mission. This note was issued during the later stages of the siege of Vicksburg (May 18-July 4, 1863) which ultimately led to the city's capitulation. McNeil indicates that as of the date of this writing (September 2025) it remains the only example known.
