Description

Military Endorsement "Presley Mahon / Co. (I) 7th Ky. Regt." T41 $100 1862 PF-12 Cr. 317A PCGS Banknote Choice Fine 15.
At first glance, this $100 appears to be a well circulated representative of an obtainable type. Upon closer inspection, however, the back bears a fascinating endorsement from one Presley Mahon. While the company letter resembles a lowercase "d," we have determined that it is an uppercase "I." The most likely match for this soldier is P(resley) B. Mahon, a private in Company I of the 7th Regiment of the Kentucky Mounted Infantry which served for the Confederacy. The 7th Regiment assembled at Camp Burnett near Clinton, KY, in September 1861. It saw action in Louisiana, Vicksburg, and Jackson, and it attached to General Lyon's Brigade in Forrest's Corps towards the end of the war. Members ultimately surrendered on May 4, 1865, in Alabama. We are not aware at present of any other note which bears this endorsement. PCGS Banknote comments on edge damage.
