Description

Last-Day-of-Issue Southern Bank Note Company T5 $100

T5 $100 1861 PF-1 Cr. 5 PMG Uncirculated 62 EPQ.
Facing the fact that supplies of notes from his northern supplier (National Bank Note Company/ABNCo) had been permanently cut off, Secretary Memminger sent an agent to find a replacement printer. The tiny ABNCo New Orleans branch was ill-suited to design and produce large quantities of new notes due to a very small staff and limited equipment. One of the approaches taken to expedite deliveries was to use only pre-war vintage vignettes, and this was borne out by the use of vignettes of Justice, a passenger train, and Minerva on the new $100. The National Bank Note Company vignettes of America and a train leaving a station used on the T3 $100 were not available and so an exact copy was not possible in the timeframe required. All of these difficulties led to notes not being delivered to Richmond until sometime in August 1861, months after contracts were awarded. This note, with serial number 5723, was one of the very last notes issued on September 23, 1861. With only 5,798 notes issued, the T5 $100 is one of the keys to the Confederate series and has a terrific history. This example is well printed with dark colors including a dark green C-HUNDRED-C protector across the face.

Estimate: $5,000 - up.
