Description

Elusive Montgomery $50 - Not Listed in the Fricke Census

T4 $50 1861 PF-2 Cr. 4 PMG Fine 12.
An attractive, evenly circulated and problem-free example, this popular Montgomery $50 has a serial number of 1423 which is not currently listed in the Fricke Census. That number would mean that this note was part of a second shipment of 1000 sheets of $50-$100 that made it out of New York harbor about 15 minutes ahead of federal authorities on or about April 22-24, 1861 - ten to twelve days after the start of the war. It was later issued out of New Orleans on July 1, 1861. The signatures remain strong and the color is ideal for the grade. The note has not been cancelled and just displays honest wear.
