Description

Evenly Circulated T4 $50

T4 $50 1861 PF-1 Cr. 4 PMG Very Fine 20.
With serial number 265, this $50 was part of the initial shipment of 607 four subject sheets made by National Bank Note Company to Montgomery just before the commencement of hostilities in April 1861. It was one of just four $50s issued on May 2, 1861. The center vignette, which depicts slaves hoeing in the field, was originally created prior to the war, but was subsequently also used on T41 $100 Treasury Notes beginning in 1862. Unlike many Montgomery notes, this example provides some evidence of being in circulation, thanks to its lower denomination. PMG mentions stains and a repair in the upper left margin, neither of which are overly distracting.

Estimate: $6,500 - up.
