Description

T37 $5 1861 PF-2 Cr. 285 PMG Extremely Fine 40.
Emitted from April 7 through September 13, 1862, the T37 $5 was produced by the eccentric Blanton Duncan of Columbia, SC. At lower left is a portrait of Confederate Secretary of the Treasury Christopher Gustavus Memminger, at center, a sailor is seated by cotton bales, and at right, Justice stands with her scales as Ceres kneels nearby and holds a large "5." While representatives of this type can be acquired in VF and lower grades, collectors will discover that XF and higher grades are not so readily located. This XF note bears a nearly full inner frame line and retains bright pink serial numbers and darkly penned signatures. We have not offered a T37 at this exact grade level since October 2021.
