Description
Key Indian Princess Type Note
T35 $5 1861 PF-1 Cr. 271 PMG Fine 12 Net.The T35 is the third rarest Confederate type. This issue was emitted from the Confederate Treasury over a period of just nine days (November 26 through December 5, 1861). The T35 $5 shared an eight subject plate with four T27 $10s. The T35 and T27 were lithographed in a complex process. First, the lithographer bound their design onto a stone plate. After this, the plate was treated with a specialized solution, and lithotine was applied to ensure the design remained on the stone. Ink was spread over it, and finally, the paper was pressed onto the block. This process produced the iconic depiction of a Native American Princess traveling through a forest which is situated at right. That vignette earned this note its "Indian Princess" nickname. Draper, Toppan, Longacre & Co. were the originators of the illustration and utilized it on numerous Obsoletes in the early 1800s. The plate used for this vignette was donated to the Confederate Treasury by the Bank of Charleston, which had used the image on its $5 denomination. T(emple) Ellett signed our current offering for Register. Ellett began as a government clerk in Richmond. He moved in June 1861 to the Treasury Note Department of the Confederate States of America, where he signed Confederate Treasury Notes. Goodloe, who signed for Treasurer, was a clerk as well, but he worked in Washington, D.C. for the United States government. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he contacted the Confederacy and was granted a job as signer of their paper money. T35s are a great rarity in Confederate collecting. PMG mentions a corner added at lower left as well as repairs. Our estimate should certainly be tested tonight for this splendid Hoyer & Ludwig creation.
