Choice Uncirculated T33 - One of Three Certified by PMG at This Level
T33 $5 1861 PF-19 Cr. 257b PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.The T33 Confederate Treasury Note in this lot, dated September 2, 1861, is of superior quality. This type was originally produced by the firm Leggett, Keatinge & Ball, but after Leggett was removed from the organization in March 1862 for associating with a Union spy, the printer name was altered to Keatinge & Ball. This later printer name is present on our current offering. The artwork on the T33 is comprised of a portrait of Confederate Secretary of the Treasury Christopher Gustavus Memminger at center and a depiction of the war goddess Minerva with a spear at right. T(homas) L(eiper) Crouch signed for Register, and A(lbert) W. Gray endorsed for Treasurer. This particular variety, PF-19, is characterized by "FIVE" watermarked paper and light green overprints on the face. The note featured in this lot shares the spot with two other T33s for second finest certified by PMG. This Confederate is set apart from other examples of the type because of its vibrant green overprints and natural paper wave. The margins are excellent for the type as well, with the bottom, left, and right frame lines being full. We have not offered any T33 above Choice Uncirculated 63 in our previous auctions. The last comparable piece we offered was another PMG CU 63 that fetched $10,800 in January 2024. T33 $5s of such lofty caliber are rarely put on the market, and they are highly contested for when opportunities to purchase them do materialize.
