Description

T32 $5 1861 PF-1 Cr. 246 PMG Very Fine 20.
The T32 Confederate Treasury Note was printed by Leggett, Keatinge & Ball, and just 20,333 examples were issued from November 15 through December 30, 1861. Designed using plates donated to the Confederate Treasury by the Mechanics Savings Bank of Savannah, this type's layout was inspired by the bank's $5 note. At left is a young boy's portrait, and at right is a machinist seated by an anvil and holding a hammer. An orange "5 - V - FIVE" underprint, utilized as an anti-counterfeiting measure, completes the design. This A plate representative is printed on plain paper and is well margined with a full inner frame line. While the underprint has both oxidized and faded slightly, it still remains bright. Representatives lacking any consequential condition detractors such as our current offering are growing more difficult to acquire, and they always command strong realizations on the infrequent occasion that they do cross our auction block.
