Description
T32 $5 1861 PF-1 Cr. 246 PMG Very Fine 20.A total of 20,333 T32 $5s were issued from November 15 through December 30, 1861. The design was slightly modified for use by the Confederate Treasury from the plates donated by the Mechanics Savings Bank. The design and plates for their $5 denomination were no longer required by the bank after they altered their name from the Mechanics Savings Bank to the Farmers & Mechanics Bank of Savannah. Leggett, Keatinge & Ball printed this type before Leggett was expelled from the firm for associating with a Union informant. At left is a portrait of a young boy and at right is a machinist with a hammer and anvil. Factory buildings populate the background of the vignette at right. A bright orange underprint at center completes the design. This piece's underprint displays minor indications of oxidization at right, but it remains much more colorful than the underprints on the majority of other examples offered. There are no meaningful condition impairments.
