Scarcer C Plate

T31 $5 1861 PF-2 Cr. 245 PMG Very Fine 30.
Printed by the SBNCo and bearing a printed date of September 2, 1861, the T31 $5 was produced as part of a four note SBNCo series which also included types 15, 19, and 22. This note's design is composed of a vignette of Navigation leaning on a capstan at left and a depiction of the statue of George Washington at right which currently resides in the Massachusetts State House at Boston. A vignette of five allegorical females is at center. From left to right, they can be identified as Commerce with a caduceus, Ceres with a cornucopia, Justice with her scales, Liberty with her pole and cap, and Industry with a distaff. In the background at left are sailing vessels traversing the sea, and at right is a cotton mill. A red-orange "5 - FIVE - 5" protector completes the design. This representative is particularly pleasing, as the protector has remained unoxidized, the frame line is nearly full, and wear is balanced. An additional important diagnostic is the presence of the C plate letter. Notes bearing the C plate are much scarcer than their A and B plate counterparts, as C plate T31s were printed utilizing the same plate as the T15 and T19 notes. In November 2025, we offered a PMG VF 30 EPQ encapsulated piece which brought $1,800. Expect our current offering to attain a similar price.
