Description
Uncancelled T27 $10 - The Rarest of All Confederate Types
T27 $10 1861 PF-1 Cr. 221 PMG Choice Fine 15.Cut short because of (thus far) undiscovered reasons, production for the T27 $10 Confederate Treasury Note was limited to 8,576 examples. This piece represents the scarcest of all Confederate types according to the current population numbers, with an approximate 1.6% survival rate. Issued from November 26 through December 5, 1861, with a printed date of September 2, 1861, this type was designed and lithographed by Hoyer & Ludwig, a firm founded by Charles Ludwig and Ludwig Hoyer which was located on 12th Street, between Main and Cary, in Richmond, VA. The portrayals contained on the face include a depiction of Liberty with her pole and cap and an eagle at upper left and a representation of an early steam locomotive at right. Both vignettes were utilized on several Obsoletes, both Southern and Northern, before and during the war. For example, the train illustration also appears on the $20 Madisonville & Pearl River Turnpike Mississippi and $5 Commercial Bank of Florida notes, while the Liberty vignette graces the $5 Commercial Bank of Wilmington North Carolina and $5 Valley Bank of Maryland notes. We are not often afforded the opportunity to auction a representative of this type, as scant examples exist to trade among collector hands. In October 2025, we did offer a PMG Fine 12 Net representative with cancellations and restoration which brought $6,600. This note exhibits evidence of a previous mounting which is not overly distracting, but more importantly, it is uncancelled. We should see our estimate exceeded tonight for this well circulated but intact representative of the rarest of all Confederate types.
