T22 $10 1861 PF-1 Cr. 150 PMG Choice Very Fine 35 EPQ.The T22 $10 represents the second lowest denomination emitted as part of the four note 1861 SBNCo series. This type, issued from November 13, 1861, through May 15, 1862, was printed on a four subject sheet, with our current B plate offering being included on a sheet of A and B plate T22s and A and B plate T31s. At left is a depiction of Thetis, one of the 50 daughters of the ancient Greek sea god Nereus, holding a trident. At center is a Native American family, and at right is a female holding an ear of corn in her right hand and a large "X" denoting the denomination in her left. A charming red-orange "X - TEN - X" protector finishes the layout. This piece presents itself as a conditional scarcity for several reasons. The protector remains fully unoxidized and brightly colored, a scarce occurrence for the type. This aspect, along with its entirely original paper surfaces and delightful eye appeal, have earned the note PMG's coveted EPQ designation. Finally, this piece is well margined, with a full inner frame line and a nearly full outer frame line. We have not auctioned a T22 representative encapsulated at a comparable grade level since February 2025, when a PMG Choice VF 35 certified piece brought $2,640. That number could very well be exceeded tonight as the market continues to expand for Confederate rarities such as this representative.
