Description

Spectacular NY Countermark
Finest Known by a Wide Margin

T21 $20 1861 PF-2 Cr. 144A PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ.
This note sports the unusual NY countermark best seen on the back. Keatinge & Ball procured one ream of bank note paper, (480-500 sheets depending on the standard used) 20% of which was used on T21 notes. The countermark covers a large portion of the note and is best detected from the back. This is the finest of eight or so known by a wide margin, and was in the finest of CSA Banknote cabinets. It was last offered in the 2003 Mintz sale. Before that, it was part of Douglas Ball's collection offering in 1987. With two appearances in a lifetime, this note is likely to be locked up for a long time.
