Description
T19 $20 Confederate Treasury Note Free of Significant Impairments - The Friedberg Plate Note
T19 $20 1861 PF-1 Cr. 137 PMG Very Fine 25.The T19 $20 Confederate Treasury Note represents the second highest denomination produced by the Southern Bank Note Co. as part of a striking four note series. Issued from January 8 through May 15, 1862, this type was dated September 2, 1861, and 14,860 examples were printed. T19s were printed on a sheet with an A plate T15 $50, a C plate T22 $10, and a C plate T31 $5. At left is a depiction of Minerva with a spear and shield bearing a likely emblem of the head of Medusa, a once-beautiful maiden transformed into a monster with snakes for hair by Minerva. Medusa could turn to stone anyone who looked upon her and gazed into her eyes. At center, Navigation reclines with a caduceus and globe as a sailing vessel and steamboat traverse the sea's waters in the background, and at right is a blacksmith at his forge with his hammer and anvil. The centerpiece of this example is the bright red-orange protector which remains unoxidized on our current offering. High quality, uncancelled T19s such as this note are growing more difficult to locate at the VF or higher grade level. This particular piece served as the plate note for all editions of the Friedberg reference, as designated on the PMG label. While we have auctioned few representatives of this type at this grade level in recent memory, the Fricke Plate Note, graded PCGS VF 30, crossed our desk in January 2025. That piece brought $4,320.
