Description

Upside Down Lower Right XX

T18 $20 1861 PF-5 Cr. 109 PMG Very Fine 20.
At first blush this appears to be a normal T18 $20 Treasury Note, of which over 2,366,000 notes were issued between October 24, 1861 and August 16, 1862. Then looking at the lower right hand corner what appears, but an upside down XX. Fricke rates this error as an R10 rarity, suggesting someplace between 21 and 50 notes still surviving. This fully margined note is well printed on problem-free paper.
