Description

T15 $50 1861 PF-1 Cr. 79 PMG Choice Very Fine 35 EPQ.
After finishing the T5 $100 and T6 $50 Treasury Notes, the New Orleans office of ABNCo aka "Southern Bank Note Company" embarked on producing the next series of $5, $10, $20, and $50 Treasury Notes. Like the earlier two values, these notes made extensive use of pre-war vignettes in order to expedite and simplify the production process. The $50 design features a well known vignette of a passenger train rounding a curve leaving the city that is flanked by a vignette of Hope standing at left and Justice standing at right. A wide 5 - 5 red-orange security panel spans the middle of the note. A scant 14,860 notes were issued before the fall of New Orleans at the end of April 1862 brought an abrupt end to shipments from the beleaguered branch office. While this note has two substantial cut cancels, it has still earned PMG's EPQ designation as it is boldly printed, retaining its original bold colors, and bright paper. The note is repair-free with no meaningful impairments aside from the cut cancels. Of the 80 examples of T15 presently recorded in the PMG Population Report, only five out-rank this note.
