Description
A Lovely Mid-Grade Manouvrier $5
T12 $5 1861 PF-1 Cr. 48 PMG Very Fine 30.Jules Manouvrier was a small New Orleans lithographer who was improbably awarded a contract to print $5 and $10 notes for the Confederacy during a time in early 1861 when, seemingly, any printer who had any talent was given a shot at producing notes for the Confederacy. In some respects, Manouvrier's design was ahead of its time. Unusually, the note's face has no vignettes but includes a simple but attractive blue back. Manouvrier's downfall was his casual approach to shipping finished notes to Richmond. Rather than being shipped in wooden boxes, the sheets of $5 and $10 notes were packed in flimsy packages that were easily breached in transit. This resulted in the $10 being withdrawn from circulation (to this day we do not know what the $10 design looked like) and the contract being pulled. Manouvrier subsequently did some work with state governments and private issuers, but his work was ended when New Orleans fell to a Union naval task force that captured New Orleans at the end of April 1862. This example is printed on good paper with well printed design details and a darker blue back. Margins are adequate and there are no cancellations, repairs, restorations, or significant impairments. With only 15,556 notes issued, this type is one of the keys to the Confederate series. This note is in the top 17% of the 121 examples of this type presently recorded in the PMG Population Report.
Estimate: $5,000 - up.
