Description

T11 $5 1861 PF-4 Cr. 44 PMG Very Fine 25.
A total of 73,355 examples of this type were emitted by the Confederate Treasury during the period of July 29 through September 7, 1861. While similar in appearance to the Hoyer & Ludwig lithographed T10 $10, save for a few differences, the T11 $5, also lithographed by the same firm, is much scarcer. At left is a vignette of a sailor leaning on a capstan, a depiction which would again appear on the 1861 T18 $20 note, and at center, Liberty leans on a shield with an eagle nearby. Variations of this illustration were also featured on the 1861 T10 and T27 $10s. Both the T18 and T27 were also lithographed by Hoyer & Ludwig, so evidently, the firm had a penchant for reusing vignettes on their other productions. The design on the $5 offered here is completed by differing "5" die counters at upper left and lower right as well as a "V" die counter at upper right. Well printed and signed on thick bond paper with full inner and nearly full outer frame lines, this note is a pleasing representative of a tougher type. PMG comments that the note has been repaired in several places, a common occurrence for T11s. In April 2025, we auctioned another PMG VF 25 encapsulated T11 which bore the same comment on its back label. That note brought $2,280.

Estimate: $2,000 - up.
