Description

T11 $5 1861 PF-4 Cr. 44 PMG Very Fine 25.
The $5 was the lowest denomination printed from the first emission executed by Hoyer & Ludwig. It used a slightly modified center vignette, similar to that used on the $10, except that a 5 counter replaces the shield with the Confederate flag. A vignette of a sailor leaning on a capstan that was used on several issues is at left. This design was printed on thick bond paper that did not fare well when subjected to long times in circulation. PMG mentions a minor restoration that involves a sealed edge tear at left center, and several small edge splits and tears that have been sealed in the top and bottom margins.
