Military and Redemption Endorsements
Military Endorsement "T.G. Williams Capt. & C.S." T3 $100 1861
PF-2 Cr. 3 PCGS Banknote Choice Fine 15 Details.This $100, with serial number 1073 was part of the second shipment of $50s and $100s leaving New York in late April, 1861 that was nearly intercepted by Federal agents. It was printed by the National Bank Note Company, under a subcontract from rival ABNCo, given in an effort to expedite deliveries to the Confederacy before the commencement of hostilities. The note, which used all pre-war vignettes and design elements to expedite the design process, features vignettes of a passenger train at a station and America which NBNCo cleverly modified to "de-federalize" her image. There is a military endorsement on the back of the note indicating it was issued to the field on May 22, 1861 by T[homas] G. Williams Capt[ain] C[ommissary] S[ubsistence]. This was likely done in his office in Lynchburg at the time. There is an additional endorsement recording the receipt of $102.51 from F(rancis) H. Hatch, Collector for the Port of New Orleans on January 28, 1862. This amount corresponds to the interest earned, at one cent per day between those two dates which were 251 days apart. PCGS Banknote mentions three mounting hinges, some relatively minor edge roughness, and equally minor edge splits. A decent uncancelled note which faces up well and has great historical information regarding how these notes were used in commerce on the back.
