Description
Elusive 8 Pounds Virginia Colonial Free of Meaningful Condition Impairments
Virginia September 1, 1775 £8 PMG Very Fine 25.With the supply of rag paper utilized for the July 17, 1775, small Virginia Colonial series exhausted, authorities turned their attention to note forms engraved by Henry Ashby which had not yet been issued to finish out the series. These remainders from the September 1773 emission were filled in with the necessary terms. That supply, however, was also soon completely drained, so James River Bank forms, unused from the April 1, 1773, series were employed instead for the September 1, 1775, emission. This example, which features a small sailing vessel vignette at upper left and which represents the third largest denomination authorized for the series, is well printed on paper with good body. Most importantly, it has survived without attracting any significant condition problems. This particular note crossed our auction block for the very first time in September 2009 as part of The Midnight Ride Collection. More recently, we offered it in May 2023, when it fetched $1,800. Besides spending time in The Midnight Ride Collection, it was also once housed in the well-known John J. Ford, Jr., collection.
