Description

Virginia March 4, 1773 £3 PMG Choice Very Fine 35.
An extraordinary grade for the issue and one of the nicest pieces we have seen of any of the four denominations of these "London Notes." These very large, thin paper notes were engraved by Henry Ashby of London and were printed in England. They are priced in the 21st edition Friedberg at $2,500 for a VF 25, with higher grades simply listed as "rare." Newman values this number up through the EF grade to the amount of $4,000. Only 500 notes of the £3 denomination were printed, the lowest figure for any of the denominations. The quality of this piece for this issue cannot be over-emphasized as the two major grading services have inspected only four others that are equal and just one higher, a 35PPQ note. Minor ink burn is found in John Blair's signature.
