South Carolina Promissory Note April-May 1775 £50 PMG Choice Fine 15, pen cancelled.
The largest denomination of only two for this issue is offered in this lot. This example is in a comment free holder save for the pen cancelled statement. The notes of this issue have handwritten dates from April 18 to May 23, 1775. The top signature on this £50 note is of Henry Middleton. He was the second presiding officer of the Continental Congress from October 22 to October 26, 1774. He left the Continental Congress before independence was declared and next served in the South Carolina state government. He was later captured by the British at the Siege of Charleston in 1780. Middleton died after the war in 1784.
