Nearly Uncirculated $70 Coram Note

South Carolina February 8, 1779 $70 PCGS Banknote About Unc 55 Details.
An ordinance of February 8, 1779 authorized $1,000,000 in Bills of Credit with an option to issue an additional $3,000,000 if that sum could not be borrowed. This $70 note was part of that second sum which comprised $50, $70, and $90 denominations. The face features Hope standing by a ribbon with the motto "SPES MENTIS SOLATIO" (Hope is the consolation of the mind) while the back features a gigantic vignette of Prometheus being attacked by an eagle intent on eating his liver. PCGS Banknote cites "Repaired Ink Erosion." The thickly applied Charles Atkins signature has a faint patch seen on the back. The Newman note graded PCGS About New 53 and topped the $4,000 mark in 2017.
