Description

South Carolina February 8, 1779 $70 PCGS Apparent Extremely Fine 40.
An overall widely margined note with clearly visible signatures. The back design, engraved by Thomas Coram of Charleston, bears a detailed vignette illustrating the myth of Prometheus, chained to the rock, having his liver perpetually devoured by an eagle. This is one of the three denominations where Coram added his name to the plate. It appears just to the left of the chain on Prometheus's ankle. The apparent grade was assigned due to repaired edge splits and tears; the upper right corner having been replaced, and the design redrawn.
