Description

South Carolina February 8, 1779 $50 Choice About New. There is a light center fold and a miniscule repaired split, but the signatures are strong and the note is beautifully centered on both sides. The original issue specified only $40, $60, $80 and $100 denominations. When the plates for those denominations were prepared, Thomas Coram of Charleston engraved both the faces and the elaborate backs, but he did not sign his work. When $50, $70 and $90 denominations were added later in the year, Coram engraved his name on the back of those three denominations. This $50 denomination bears the "T. Coram Sculp. 1779" in the ground below the knee of the mythical Atlas. Notes of any denomination from this popular and attractive issue are seldom seen in high grade, and the current offering is the finest group we've ever handled.
