Description
Pennsylvania March 25, 1775 6s Gem New. An unusually nice example of the scarcer of the two Pennsylvania Lighthouse issues. The back bears a vignette of the Cape Henlopen Lighthouse. Cape Henlopen is at the southern entrance to the mouth of Delaware Bay, across from Cape May, New Jersey. This note was issued to raise funds for the Cape Henlopen Lighthouse, as well as buoys and piers in the region. That whole area is now part of Delaware, but until 1776, Delaware and Pennsylvania shared a governor, although they had separate legislatures, and the counties of Kent, Sussex and Newcastle were essentially part of Pennsylvania until that time. The note is exceptionally well margined, with perfect surface originality, three strong signatures and extremely sharp print quality. A real beauty. Est. 600up
