Description

Benjamin Franklin Bache Printed Small Change Note

Pennsylvania Bank of North America August 6, 1789 $3/90 (3 Pence) Haxby G16 PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
This issue is discussed on page 343 in The Early Paper Money of America by Eric P. Newman. Minister Plenipotentiary Benjamin Franklin, while in Paris, purchased two reams of special marbled woved/polychrome paper from James Woodmason of London in 1779, in order to print obligations of the United States for money loaned by France. This was accomplished and Franklin took the remainder of the reams back to America. Franklin gave the paper to his printer grandson, Benjamin Franklin Bache for printing this small change issue. The polychrome side was used for the back. The back label of this note states that this example has great color, which is due to the bold colors of the polychrome back. We have now offered five different examples of this note. Our last offering occurred in January 2022. It graded PMG Choice XF 45 with minor repairs and realized $2,760. The piece in this lot was previously mounted.
